Event: Ghana Exhibit
Location: Gatewood Building
Date: 04/08/2011

Students from interior architecture and photography department have together an exhibit to share their experiences in Ghana. The group share their architectural, cultural and personal experiences through audio-visual presentations. It seems like all of them have amazing memory. Even though a lot of stuff didn’t go the way they were suppose to during the trip. Last year, I was in the Hanna’s studio class who is in charge with designing the school in Ghana. It was a challenge for us, where there is no phone service, no electricity, no plumbing and no air conditioning in In designing a school for Kyekyewere, Ghana. We have to step outside of our own experience of what a school is. I am happy for these student who have the opportunity to build the school and experience different culture.   When we mix around with other people, we influence each other. If we have the chance to visit other countries for a few weeks or months, we can see how other people behave there and learn something from them. Each culture has its own values. Some values might benefit us, while some make us worse off. When we interact with people from other cultures, it’s wise to spot these values. If possible, adopt some of the positive values and avoid the negative ones. Doing so will enrich your own personal culture. If we can interact with more people around the world and adopt their positive values, imagine how well we can improve our life. As a designer, it’s our job to understand the prospective culture if we want to go to global. We went to India last spring break, It was amazing. It is so different from our culture, such as food and architecture. We seem so many poor children on the street begging, really they should be in the school. After seeing everything, makes me appreciate what we have here.

Date: March 31.
Event: Antique & Design Center Opening Night Gala.
Location: Market Square.

The event is organized by the High Point Market. I was invited through one of my friends, she worked as the receptionist for a Chinese furniture company. My intention going to the event was trying to get know the company a little better. They are from San Fransisco, I believe they have multiple offices through out U.S. The company mainly focus on the antique rosewood Chinese furniture. Although furniture it’s not something I am interested at. But it’s nice to go and meet the people who are in business. Following are the people I have met in this social event.   Tommy Tan, who is the president of the company. I didn’t talk to him that much. But he seems really Intelligent and well informed.  Niu Xiao, who just graduate two years ago from Academy of Art at San Fransisco. Who started doing the intern with the company, now he is in the design team.  Xiao Bao, I am really sure what he does. He said, he mainly focus on the getting clients from all over the world.   Da Peng, who is  in charge with manufacture in China. That’s why he is in China most of time.   Daniel James, who is also the designer for them. He is American, he is the middle guy. He helps out, so the furniture is more suitable for American taste.   After attending to the event, It seems like there are a lot of business practice in the design world.  A lot of businesses are going global. What I learn from this is company and the people I have met is that is if you want to take your business to the next level is not a easy thing to do. There are many rules and games you have to follow. First, of course, you have to understand the culture. Learn what will be expected of you and talk to people who have dealt with the culture. Second Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs. Such as, in the United States, all business agreements should be put into writing in the form of contracts. However, you will need to make sure that these agreements are enforceable in both nations, which may necessitate consulting lawyers in both areas. You should also take the time to find out what customs and ‘common laws’ may affect any contracts that you make. This will not only protect you from legal woes, it will keep you can accidentally offending or disappointing your overseas partners. third is Maintain good communication. One of the keys to maintaining global business ties is to have good communication and to be clear about all expectations. Luckily, there are ways to accomplish this without spending a ton of money. Many business owners find that face to face chat programs such Skype are more personal and, best of all, completely free ways to keep in touch with their global partners, suppliers, and customers.
